Course Content
A typical day on the Cubertou Art Holiday consists of practical Art sessions until lunch time, and then a picnic in the meadow or a buffet in the barn.
After lunch is siesta time; have a rest by the pool, take a walk to one of the local historic sites.. the time is yours. Art sessions re-commence in the late afternoon. A convivial gourmet candle-lit supper, with local wine, is served in the barn. Evening entertainment is a bit of a ‘free for all’ with much input from the guests. There may be barn dancing, French film, quizzes, star gazing … and more!
During the first few days guests will learn and experiment with a wide range of artistic techniques and materials - both traditional and contemporary. These will include printing, painting, collage, drawing and construction. Enjoyable methods for freeing up technical ability will also be explored (it is easier to do most things when you are relaxed and this certainly applies to art skills.)
Mid-week - guests will work towards devising and realising a personal art project that will very likely reflect inspiration from the area – Cubertou, the woods, local sites and ruins – and involve skills learnt earlier in the week.
Tutors
Jo Buffery
The course is led by Jo Buffery. Jo studied at Dartington College of Arts and has been encouraging and enabling wonderful works of art from students of all ages and skill levels for the last 25yrs.
Jo has led arts projects for a wide range of organisations including Warwick Arts Centre, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Creative Partnerships, English National Ballet and Cheshire County Council. For a number of years Jo ran a residential Arts School for visiting school pupils and their teachers.

Rowan Fuggle
Jo will be assisted by prize-winning Oxford University fine arts graduate, Rowan Fuggle. Rowan’s technical ability in art is wide ranging. An extremely skilled draughtsman, in pencil and other media he makes use of a range of techniques to produce the most extraordinarily exquisite and detailed work (the pictures below really are in pencil!). He is also a confident painter and printmaker and has a passionate interest in art from the traditional to the contemporary.
Rowan is also a ‘Charlie’ award-winning set and costume designer for two theatrical productions with the Oxford Playhouse.
Rowan has previously assisted on Art courses run by Cork University’s Glucksman Gallery, the Islington Arts Factory and Dame Alice Owen’s School. He has been attending arts courses since he was very young and is as interested in teaching art skills as he is in learning them, be they from life drawing and anatomy to Japanese black ink painting.
There will also be additional practical support from a current or recent art student.
