Flute Holiday with Philippa Davies & Jan Willem Nelleke (post grade 8/diploma level+)

Wednesday 21st to Wednesday 28th August 2024

This well established Flute Summer Course is for advanced flute players who would like an enjoyable and rewarding week improving flute playing and chamber music skills, in a relaxed, fun and supportive environment.

Philippa Davies is a world class flute player and teacher. She is flute player of London Wigmore Hall’s resident ensemble, the Nash Ensemble and of London Winds. Philippa performs regularly as a soloist in venues around the globe. Philippa is a much sought after teacher and is a professor at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

Playing will be mostly in small groups; workshops and exercises will usually include all participants. There will also be opportunities for playing prepared flute solos with pianist Jan Willem Nelleke and for ad-hoc ensemble playing. There is a maximum of 14 players on this course.

Repertoire in 2023 included Berthomieu – Arcadie, Beeftink – Frequency, Vivaldi – Four Seasons, Bozza – Trios Pièces pour Quatre Flûtes, Damase – Quatuor de Flûtes, Beeftink – Birds, Bozza – Jour d’été a la montagne, Guiot – Divertimento Jazz, Castérède – Flûtes en Vacances. Repertoire for 2024  will be confirmed a few weeks in advance of the course.

Philippa Davies and Jan Willem Nelleke will give a concert in a local church during the week. This is always a fabulous event and is very much enjoyed by the local inhabitants too. There will be an informal concert by course participants, to an invited audience, at the end of the course.

There are two tutored sessions before lunch and one between afternoon tea and supper. Participants can organise their own ensemble playing in the afternoon and early evening; we have an extensive music library available.  There is also informal music making after supper on most evenings.

The tutored sessions comprise a mixture of workshops; breathing, tone production, posture etc., and repertoire sessions; mostly in small groups with some tutti ensemble playing. We shall aim to send out most of the course repertoire in advance. Repertoire for 2024 will be selected when the course is full, or around mid July, whichever is the sooner.

If you prefer a break in the afternoon then we have woods and meadows to explore and a lovely pool to relax by.  For those with cars, there are numerous castles and 13th Century villages in the area.
